30-Year-Old Nigerian Athlete Shot Dead Days Before Her MBA Graduation in US After Chasing Armed Robber Over $1,500

The Nigerian sporting and academic communities have been plunged into deep mourning following the heartbreaking murder of Oluwabukola Pereira, a talented 30-year-old middle-distance runner who was shot dead in the United States just days before receiving her master’s degree. The tragic incident occurred at a car service center in Lockland, Ohio, where she worked to support her dreams.

According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, the nightmare unfolded during a suspected robbery at Arise Auto Center. A co-worker revealed that an armed assailant stormed the premises, looting roughly $1,500 from the cash register. In a brave but fatal instinct, Pereira pursued the fleeing suspect to the back of the building, where the robber turned and shot her twice. Emergency first responders were unable to save her, and the suspect remains at large.

The timing of the tragedy makes it exceptionally painful. Pereira was a dedicated student at Xavier University and was due to march at her MBA graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 16. University President Colleen Hanycz released an emotional statement describing her as a beacon of “positivity, deep faith, and generous spirit,” revealing that the bright student had already secured admission to begin another advanced degree in Business Analytics later this year.

Before her journey to the United States, Pereira was a rising track star in Lagos, discovered and sponsored by James Lafferty, the former CEO of Coca-Cola West Africa. She reportedly arrived in the U.S. with just $10 and a dream, later earning degrees from Southwest Baptist University and the University of Texas at El Paso before moving to Ohio. On the personal front, the first-born of four children was also looking forward to a bright personal portal, having been engaged since 2025 with plans to marry later this year.

As police investigators continue to comb through security footprints to find the assailant, her grassroots coaches back home have expressed profound devastation. For a young woman who ran through life’s toughest trenches with discipline and grace, her sudden death stands as a painful fracture for everyone who witnessed her inspiring journey from the tracks of Lagos to the academic heights of America.
