Wabara-Led BoT Seizes Control of PDP to Avert Total Collapse; Emergency Caretaker Committee in the Works After Supreme Court Sacks National Leaders

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has entered an “emergency management” phase as its Board of Trustees (BoT) moved to seize the steering wheel of the party’s affairs. Following a day of judicial carnage at the Supreme Court, which left the nation’s main opposition party without a recognized leadership, Senator Adolphus Wabara announced on Thursday night that the BoT would serve as the party’s interim custodian.

The intervention is seen as a desperate “technical rescue” designed to fill the vacuum created by the court’s nullification of the 2025 Ibadan Convention. With the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee effectively dissolved by law, the PDP was facing a period of “legal anarchy” that threatened its participation in the upcoming 2027 primary season. By invoking the “emergency powers” of the BoT, Wabara and other party elders are attempting to provide a bridge to a new, legally sound leadership.

“We cannot allow the labor of our heroes past to be destroyed by a judicial technicality,” Wabara told a weary press corps at the end of the marathon session in Abuja. “The BoT has taken over to ensure that our party remains a going concern. We are already mulling the names of a high-powered National Caretaker Committee that will be inclusive, neutral, and focused on one thing: a fresh, credible convention.”

The proposed Caretaker Committee is expected to be announced within the next 48 hours. Insiders suggest the BoT is looking for “untainted” veterans from the six geopolitical zones to lead the interim team. The goal is to pacify various warring factions especially the Sule Lamido and Wike-aligned groups whose legal “trenches” led to the current crisis.

For the average party member, the takeover provides a glimmer of stability in an otherwise chaotic week. However, the pressure remains high. With the 2027 transition cycle moving at a “digital-age” speed, any delay in forming the caretaker team could lead to a mass exodus of members seeking shelter in the ruling APC. For now, the elders have taken the keys to the secretariat, but the road back to a unified PDP remains a steep and narrow path.
