One Dead as Gas Tanker Crushes Tricycle in Anambra After Brake Failure; Fire Service on Standby to Prevent Explosion at Agu Awka Reconstruction Site

The “Drill or Drop” reality of road safety in Anambra State took a tragic turn, when a mechanical failure led to a “Tsunami” of chaos at the busy Agu Awka intersection. A fully loaded gas tanker, unable to stop due to failed brakes, rammed into a commercial tricycle, killing the operator on the spot. The “Solution” to the state’s ongoing traffic diversions became a scene of mourning as the tricycle was reduced to scrap metal in the “digital trenches” of the ongoing Awka-Enugu Expressway reconstruction.

The “Renewed Hope” for a safe commute was shattered at approximately 11:00 a.m. when the Mack LPG tanker lost control. According to Margaret Onabe, the FRSC Public Education Officer, the Keke driver was simply trying to navigate a passage from security personnel at a diversion point when the heavy vehicle plowed over him. “The victim was confirmed dead at the scene,” Onabe stated, noting that his remains have been moved to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital morgue.

Tension remained high for several hours as emergency responders “tinkered” with the delicate task of securing the scene. With the tanker carrying a volatile cargo of cooking gas, the State Fire Service was deployed to forestall any potential explosion that could have turned the tragedy into a wider disaster. Sector Commander Bridget Asekhauno issued a stinging reminder to transport companies: “Lives are irreplaceable. This crash was avoidable if the vehicle had been properly maintained.”

As the 2027 political cycle begins to heat up and infrastructure projects like the Awka roadworks continue to cause bottlenecks, the Presidency has urged state commands to increase enforcement. For the family of the tricycle driver, the message today is one of sudden, heartbreaking loss. For the rest of Anambra, it is a grim warning that even a minor mechanical fault can have a “Tsunami” effect when heavy-duty tankers are involved.
