FG Releases ₦9.99bn to Lockdown HIV Drug Supply and Build World-Class Cancer Centers Nationwide
The Federal Government has moved to safeguard the lives of millions of Nigerians by approving a ₦9.99 billion emergency “health shield.” On Wednesday, March 4, the Federal Executive Council greenlit the massive fund to ensure that HIV medications and high-end cancer treatment equipment remain available and affordable, regardless of the global economic climate.
With international aid for HIV/AIDS becoming increasingly unpredictable, the government is taking the driver’s seat. A large slice of the new funding is earmarked for “third-line” antiretroviral drugs the last line of defense for patients who have developed resistance to standard treatments. This move is timed perfectly with the arrival of Lenacapavir, a revolutionary injectable drug arriving in Nigeria this March that only requires two doses a year to prevent HIV.
But the “State of Harmony” in health doesn’t stop at HIV. The ₦9.99 billion also signals a “war on cancer.” Six major hospitals across Nigeria are set for a high-tech facelift, with funds allocated to buy the latest diagnostic tools and treatment machines. The goal is simple: to make sure “Stage 1” doesn’t become a death sentence simply because a patient couldn’t find a working machine in their zone.
“We are moving from ‘donor-dependent’ to ‘domestic-driven’,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health stated following the FEC meeting. “Whether it’s the father fighting cancer in the East or the young person accessing new HIV prevention in the North, this ₦9.9 billion ensures that the quality of your care is no longer determined by your zip code or the strength of foreign grants.” As the 2026 health budget begins to roll out, this initial ₦9.99 billion “shot in the arm” is being seen as a critical victory for the nation’s most vulnerable patients.
