32 Teams Storm Lagos for 12th Awolowo Memorial Football Tournament

The hunt for Nigeria’s next football superstars has officially moved to the Lekki Playground in Lagos. On Monday, the 12th edition of the Obafemi and H.I.D. Awolowo Memorial Youth Football Tournament kicked off with 32 teams from across the South-West ready to battle for the ultimate trophy.

This year’s competition isn’t just about the boys; it’s a massive showcase of talent across the board. The tournament features 16 teams in the Under-10 boys’ category and another 16 teams in the Under-17 girls’ category, proving that the future of Nigerian football is bright for both genders.

Beyond the goals and trophies, the tournament carries a deep historical weight. Organized to honor the legendary Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his wife, H.I.D. Awolowo, the event celebrates the “Sage’s” 117th posthumous birthday. Supported by the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation and sponsored by Value Jet Airline, the goal is to use football as a tool for youth empowerment and character building principles the Awolowo family stood for.

Match coordinator Aliu Ganiu promised that this 2026 edition would be the best organized yet. “We’ve put everything in place to ensure a smooth tournament,” he said, urging the young players to play fair and stay disciplined.

The opening matches set a high bar for the rest of the month. In the boys’ section, Young Boys FA from Orile took on Otta Babes from Ogun State in a cross-border rivalry, while the girls’ opening game saw United Queens of Ibadan face off against Lagos-based Marry Queens FC.
