Zenith Bank Extends N300 Million Lifeline to Victims of Devastating Mokwa Flood
Zenith Bank Plc, a leading financial institution in Nigeria, has today, Wednesday, June 12, 2025, announced a significant donation of N300 million to the victims of the recent catastrophic floods that swept through Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. This substantial corporate social responsibility gesture is aimed at providing crucial relief and bolstering recovery efforts for the thousands affected by the disaster.
The generous contribution was officially presented to the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, at the Niger State Liaison Office in Abuja. Mr. Louis Odom, an Executive Director at Zenith Bank, led a high-powered management delegation of the bank on a solemn condolence visit to the Governor.
During the visit, Mr. Odom conveyed the profound sympathy of Zenith Bank’s management and staff to Governor Bago and the people of Niger State over the tragic incident, which he described as “unfortunate.” He emphasized that the N300 million donation was specifically intended to mitigate the severe impact of the disaster and offer immediate relief to the numerous victims who have lost homes, livelihoods, and loved ones.
Odom acknowledged the immense scale of the reconstruction and rehabilitation required in the state following the floods. “Zenith Bank is aware that the state will embark on massive reconstruction that will require huge sums of money, and as such, the bank felt the need to support the state as one of its partners,” he stated. He also offered prayers for the souls of those who perished in the floods and expressed hope for the state’s swift recovery from the calamity.
In response, Governor Umaru Bago expressed heartfelt gratitude to Zenith Bank for their timely and generous donation. He lauded the financial institution as a “worthy partner” that has consistently demonstrated its commitment to supporting the “New Niger Agenda” and standing by the state in times of critical need. The Governor specifically acknowledged Zenith Bank’s significant presence and continuous engagement in corporate social responsibility, human, and institutional capital development within Niger State.
The Governor reaffirmed Niger State’s commitment to further strengthening its partnership with Zenith Bank, particularly in vital developmental sectors such as agriculture, health, and education, as the state navigates its recovery phase.
The devastating floods, which occurred between May 28 and 29, 2025, following torrential rainfall and a reported dam collapse, led to the loss of over 200 lives and displaced thousands of residents in Mokwa. The disaster also destroyed over 3,000 homes, swept away critical infrastructure including bridges and roads, and submerged more than 10,000 hectares of farmlands, severely impacting the region’s economy and food security. Zenith Bank’s N300 million donation is a vital contribution to the ongoing multi-pronged relief and rehabilitation efforts being coordinated by state and federal governments, as well as international and local humanitarian organizations.
