UNILAG Gets Massive N1.33 Billion Windfall from NELFUND to Pay Fees for 6,000 Students
The dream of higher education has become a reality for thousands of students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), as the Federal Government’s student loan fund, NELFUND, officially dropped a staggering N1.33 billion into the institution’s coffers.
This major cash injection is designed to wipe away the tuition and fee burdens for 6,308 eligible students for the 2025/2026 academic session. For these students, who were recently caught in the middle of registration worries, the arrival of these funds means they can finally put their financial anxieties aside and focus entirely on their books.
NELFUND’s management confirmed that the disbursement followed a rigorous verification process using data submitted by the university. By paying these fees directly to UNILAG, the agency has effectively cleared a path for beneficiaries to access classrooms, libraries, and campus services without the usual “cleared or not” drama at the bursary.
In a statement, the agency’s spokesperson emphasized that once a school receives these funds, there should be no further delays in allowing students to register for their courses. “Our goal is simple: ensure that no brilliant mind is forced out of school because they can’t afford the bills,” the agency noted, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and the welfare of Nigerian youth.
The Managing Director of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, has also assured other tertiary institutions across the country that more disbursements are on the way as the 2025/2026 session kicks into full gear. For UNILAG students, however, the message is clear the “Akoka” campus is open for business, and the government has already picked up the tab for thousands of its scholars.
