President Bola Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu stated that Nigeria is ready to transform the challenges posed by climate change into opportunities for economic growth and sustainable development. He highlighted that rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and shifting rainfall patterns are threatening Nigeria’s development and the well-being of its citizens.
Tinubu made these remarks in a keynote address delivered at a product launch by NETZENCE Sustainability Limited, a sustainability technology and management company, on Tuesday in Abuja. Represented by the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Uche Nnaji, Tinubu addressed the theme, “Accelerating Nigeria’s Net Zero Target and Carbon Market Ecosystem with Netzence Sustainability Limited.”
“Nigeria, like many other nations, is already witnessing the devastating impacts of climate change,” Tinubu said. “These changes threaten the very foundation of our development and the well-being of our people. Yet, within this challenge lies a tremendous opportunity to reshape our economy, embrace sustainable development, and position Nigeria as a leader in the global fight against climate change.”
The President reiterated Nigeria’s ambitious goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2060, emphasizing that this target is a commitment to future generations, environmental protection, and sustainable economic growth.
Tinubu noted that the Federal Government is building on existing climate adaptation efforts, including the Nigerian Carbon Market Initiative, the Green Bond Initiative, and the National Council on Climate Change and Renewable Energy Policy. However, he stressed that more work is needed to accelerate the net zero target by focusing on key areas such as clear policies and regulations, robust carbon pricing, mobilization of green finance, embracing new technologies, and fostering partnerships with other nations and the private sector.
“By focusing on these areas, Nigeria can achieve its net zero target, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute meaningfully to global climate efforts. As we transition to a low-carbon economy, we will create new economic opportunities, generate jobs, and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians,” Tinubu concluded.
The President also praised Netzence Sustainability Limited for leading this initiative and assured that the Federal Government would collaborate with the company through the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, as well as other agencies.
During the event, Dr. Sadiq Sani, Founder & CEO of Netzence Sustainability Limited, introduced a new product, CloseCarbon, a Carbon Footprint Tracking System. Sani explained that CloseCarbon tracks, monitors, and calculates carbon footprints, aiding in sustainable development and helping Nigeria meet its emission reduction and net zero targets.
He also offered free onboarding for individuals and companies interested in using the new platform, emphasizing that CloseCarbon is designed to be accessible and free for everyone. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Uche Nnaji, and other key stakeholders.
