‘Segun Awolowo Exemplified Awo’s Pedigree,’ President Tinubu Mourns Grandson of Late Statesman at Age 62

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu today, Thursday, November 20, 2025, expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mr. Olusegun Awolowo Jr., the esteemed grandson of the late nationalist and Premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Olusegun Awolowo, a lawyer and distinguished public servant, passed away at the age of 62.

In a statement released by the Presidency, President Tinubu mourned the deceased, whom he described as an exemplary Nigerian whose life echoed the ideals of his famed grandfather.

“Segun Awolowo was a man of immense dedication who exemplified the Awo legacy and pedigree in his commitment to public service and the unity of our nation,” President Tinubu stated. “His contributions, particularly during his tenure as the head of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), where he championed the Zero Oil initiative, remain indelible.”

A Life Dedicated to Service

Olusegun Awolowo, who served two consecutive terms as the CEO of the NEPC, was celebrated for his efforts to diversify Nigeria’s economy away from crude oil dependence. He had previously served in various government capacities, including in the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The Awolowo family confirmed the passing in a statement issued earlier today, describing him as a “painfully loyal servant to Nigeria” who dedicated his life to the service of his country with vision, integrity, and unwavering commitment.

“He was the world’s most phenomenal husband, father and grandfather—steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor of our family,” the family statement read.
