Political Analyst Describes Obasa’s Impeachment as a Self-Inflicted Setback

On Monday, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly impeached Obasa, citing numerous statutory and financial violations.

A political analyst, Jide Ojo, has characterized the impeachment of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, as a self-inflicted setback. Speaking on a television politics program on Monday, Ojo suggested that Obasa’s controversial remarks directed at Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu may have contributed to his removal from office.

Ojo explained, “On social media, many have pointed out that he (Obasa) appeared disrespectful to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the budget presentation exercise, especially with his comment that ‘I am not too young or inexperienced to be the governor of the state and I am more qualified than some of those people who are there.’ This was widely interpreted as a snide remark aimed at the sitting governor.”

He added, “As a Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, you lack immunity and serve at the pleasure of your colleagues. It’s unclear why Obasa acted the way he did, but allegations of keeping the governor and party elders waiting for hours without apologies, coupled with resistance even after the President’s intervention, suggest arrogance and stubbornness. The saying goes, ‘Those the gods want to destroy, they first make reckless.’ This may indeed be a self-inflicted own goal.”

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly impeached Obasa on Monday, accusing him of multiple statutory and financial violations. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, his former deputy, was sworn in as Speaker, while Mojeed Fatai was appointed Deputy Speaker.
