Plateau State Allocates ₦2 Billion to Enhance Rural Infrastructure and Agricultural Connectivity

The Plateau State Government has committed ₦2 billion as counterpart funding for the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), aiming to construct over 331 kilometers of rural roads and establish agro-logistics centers across the state.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang announced this initiative during the inauguration of agro-logistics centers in Mangu, Shendam, and Bassa Local Government Areas. He emphasized that the project, initially conceived in 2021, gained momentum under his administration in 2023.

“Mobilizing ₦2 billion amidst current financial constraints required significant effort. However, the potential impact on our rural communities justified this investment,” Governor Mutfwang stated.

The RAAMP initiative, supported by the World Bank and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), aims to improve market access for farmers, reduce post-harvest losses, and stimulate rural economic growth. The project includes constructing 331 kilometers of rural roads, 45-meter cross drainages, and developing agro-logistics centers to enhance agricultural value chains.

National RAAMP Coordinator Aminu Mohammad, represented by Salisu Abubakar, commended Plateau State for its commitment, noting that the state ranks first among 19 participating states in project implementation. He also announced an additional $575 million in funding for the next phase of RAAMP.

Governor Mutfwang urged local government chairpersons, traditional rulers, and community leaders to ensure quality and accountability in project execution. He also highlighted plans to train 10,000 youths in agribusiness over the next five years in partnership with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA).
