Peter Obi: Seeking Alliances to Benefit Nigeria, Not Power

Mr Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, will only consider a merger that prioritizes Nigeria’s welfare over mere power acquisition, according to Yunusa Tanko, Chief Spokesperson of Obi-Datti and Director of Media for the Labour Party (LP). In an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Tanko emphasized that Obi seeks alliances with leaders who share his values and commitment to improving the country.

Amidst reports of a possible merger between Obi and other political figures to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Tanko clarified Obi’s stance. He stated, “His Excellency, Peter Gregory is not interested in a merger solely for the pursuit of power. He is focused on partnerships that will lift Nigerians out of poverty, ensure adequate healthcare, provide potable drinking water, and resolve power supply issues.”

Tanko reiterated that any potential merger would be scrutinized to ensure alignment of values. This comes after a recent meeting between Obi and Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in 2023, which sparked merger speculations.

However, former House of Representatives member Tajudeen Yusuf expressed doubt about a merger between Obi and Atiku, noting Atiku’s intent to continue contesting presidential elections as long as he is alive and healthy. Yusuf remarked, “They have worked together before in 2019. It would not be out of place if they work together again, but I don’t see the possibility.” He suggested that both might contest in 2027, complicating merger prospects.
