Peter Obi Denies Arrest Rumors, Addresses Political Allegations
Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate, has refuted rumors of his arrest, stating that he is currently at his residence in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The clarification came amid ongoing allegations and counter-allegations stemming from a death threat controversy involving Felix Morka, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement shared via his official Twitter handle on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Obi urged the public to disregard the arrest claims, labeling them as baseless. “The recurring fake news about me continues. I have been made aware of a circulating fake news story regarding my alleged arrest. Let me categorically state that these claims are entirely false. I am presently at my home in Onitsha, Anambra State. Such fabrications have unfortunately become a pastime for some individuals,” he wrote.
Obi also recalled a similar incident in September 2024, when it was falsely reported that he was arrested by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) while he was actually in Rwanda. “At the time, while I was in Rwanda, they spread lies that DSS invaded my house. Now, as I stay in my home in Onitsha, they claim I was arrested in Abuja. These repeated fabrications serve no positive purpose. Let us not allow baseless rumors to distract us from the critical challenges our nation faces,” he added.
Meanwhile, Felix Morka has clarified his controversial comments about Obi in response to accusations that his remarks incited negative reactions, including death threats.
Speaking on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Wednesday, Morka explained that his remarks were a direct response to questions about Obi being labeled as a “voodoo economist” and a “prophet of doom.”
The development highlights the tense political atmosphere and underscores the challenges of navigating misinformation in Nigeria’s political discourse.
