The PDP has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent address, labeling it as insensitive to the hardships faced by Nigerians.
In a statement released on Sunday, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba said, “The speech by President Tinubu in response to the ongoing protests across the country clearly highlights the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration’s insensitivity to the suffering of Nigerians and the dire situation in the country.”
Tinubu’s address came after days of protests in multiple cities, which the PDP claims were spurred by their own calls for the president to address the nation.
“Our party is dismayed that, despite the fact it took President Tinubu the prodding of the PDP to speak to the nation, the speech failed to offer any concrete measures to alleviate the severe hardships plaguing the country,” the statement continued. “Mr. President’s speech did not address the citizens’ demands for immediate actions to lower the price of petroleum products, halt the depreciation of the Naira, and urgently provide food supplies to starving Nigerians.”
The PDP also expressed shock that the president’s speech did not order an investigation into the brutal killings of unarmed protesters by certain operatives of APC-controlled security agencies, despite the protests being driven by demands for good governance, protection, security, and welfare, which are fundamental responsibilities of the government.
Instead, the PDP criticized the speech for focusing on self-praise, making empty claims of achievements, and offering hollow projections, which they argued only underscore the public’s perception that the APC administration is indifferent to the pain and suffering of millions of Nigerians, especially the youth, whose dreams and aspirations are being crushed.
The PDP stated that it is evident the APC administration is overwhelmed and lacks solutions to the numerous problems caused by its anti-people policies, which are choking life in the country.
The party called on President Tinubu to acknowledge the severe state of the nation under his leadership, urging him to address the people’s demands by reducing the cost of petroleum products, stabilizing the Naira, and taking immediate steps to provide food to Nigerians. They also advised the president to reduce the size of government, cut back on luxury expenditures, and free up resources for immediate interventions to improve the well-being of the citizens.
The statement was signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary.
