Over 200 Kano Lawmakers Endorse Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Urge Him to Contest Governorship on APC Platform

The political landscape in Kano State is rapidly taking shape ahead of the 2027 general elections, following a massive endorsement for the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, by a coalition of serving and former state lawmakers. The influential group, numbering over 200 members who have served in the Kano State House of Assembly since 1999, declared their support for Barau’s gubernatorial bid today, Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

The lawmakers, who paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Senate President in Abuja, urged him to formally contest the governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The endorsement is a significant move in the state’s complex political calculus, currently governed by the opposition New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The delegation was led by former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abdulaziz G. Gafasa, who described Senator Barau as the most suitable and “most marketable candidate” capable of leading the APC back to victory.

Performance and Cross-District Appeal

Gafasa highlighted three core reasons for their unanimous endorsement: Barau’s sustained track record of positively impacting the lives of people across all three senatorial districts of Kano State; his consistent support, both financial and political, for the APC; and his ability to unite political stakeholders.

Another serving lawmaker, Hon. Garba Yau Gwarmai, emphasized that the decision was based purely on the Deputy Senate President’s outstanding service and performance over the last decade in the National Assembly. “You have done well in all spheres of our state. This is why we want you to govern Kano, our beloved state,” Gwarmai stated.

While Senator Barau Jibrin has yet to make a formal declaration, he graciously accepted the show of support, thanking the lawmakers whom he described as true grassroots politicians. He urged them to continue promoting the principles of the APC and supporting the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to “rescue and restore the glorious days of Kano State.” The endorsement signals a strong convergence of APC interests behind Barau as the party seeks to reclaim the strategically vital Northwest state.
