The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, has announced a significant breakthrough in its fight against crime, apprehending a suspect allegedly involved in the murder of the ward chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Gbenga Abe. This arrest is part of a larger operation that also saw the capture of 31 other suspected criminals across the state.
The Commander of the Amotekun Corps in Ondo State, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed the arrests while parading the suspects at the agency’s headquarters in Akure. He stated that the operations were conducted across various parts of the state as part of Amotekun’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents.
Mr. Gbenga Abe, who was the APC chairman for Ward 10, Supare Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area, was tragically killed in his hometown during the general elections. His death had sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the state. Adeleye did not disclose the identity of the suspected killer arrested but confirmed that investigations are ongoing to gather more evidence and unravel the full circumstances surrounding the murder.
Beyond the high-profile murder suspect, the 31 other individuals were arrested for a range of offenses including kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, illegal possession of firearms, and various other criminal activities. Commander Adeleye revealed that some of the suspects were involved in snatching motorcycles and extorting money from residents. He reiterated the corps’ resolve to rid the state of criminal elements, especially as the Christmas and New Year festivities approach, which often see a surge in criminal activities.
Adeleye assured the public that all apprehended suspects would be thoroughly investigated. Those found culpable would be charged to court, while others without sufficient evidence would be released. He called on residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that community cooperation is vital in crime prevention and apprehension.
The Amotekun Corps also announced that it would be deploying additional personnel to vulnerable areas and major roads across the state to enhance security and ensure a peaceful festive season.
