Obi Urges Nigerians: Stay United, Don’t Let Politicians Divide You

Peter Obi

On Saturday, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, urged Nigerians not to let desperate politicians divide them along religious and ethnic lines, especially during elections. He made this appeal after receiving the 2024 Courageous Citizen Award at an event in Abuja organized by the Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy.

Represented by his party’s governorship aspirant in Anambra, Valentine Ozigbo, Obi emphasized that the high voter turnout in the 2023 general elections demonstrated the people’s desire for change and the possibility of a new Nigeria.

Obi also dismissed rumors that the Yoruba tribe harbors animosity towards people from the South-East. He stated, “The 2023 election wasn’t a Christian or Igbo project; it was a Nigerian project.” He praised the unity shown by Nigerians across different backgrounds, mentioning prominent figures like former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who stood firm for the cause.

Addressing the issue of political manipulation, Obi urged Nigerians to stop being tools for politicians. He highlighted the sacrifices made by many for the dream of a new Nigeria and acknowledged those who lost their lives for this cause.

In other awards, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo, and Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese Rev. Matthew Kukah received special recognition.
