NNPC/Renaissance JV Donates $300,000 to Sustain Operation of Advanced LINAC Cancer Treatment Machine at National Hospital, Abuja
Cancer patients relying on Nigeria’s public healthcare system received a major boost today, Thursday, November 27, 2025, as the NNPC Limited / Renaissance Joint Venture (JV) announced a significant donation of $300,000 to the National Hospital, Abuja. The funding is specifically earmarked to ensure the continuous operation and scheduled maintenance of the hospital’s advanced Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Radiotherapy Machine.
The LINAC machine, which was itself donated by the same JV in 2019, is a cornerstone of in-country cancer treatment. The new financial injection is critical to preventing treatment disruptions caused by funding constraints related to maintaining sophisticated medical technology.
The Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, Engr. Oluwaseyi Omotowa, noted that the sustainability of such technology hinges on regular maintenance. “This donation ensures timely maintenance, minimises downtime, and guarantees precise calibration of the machine, safeguarding the quality of care for patients,” he stated.
Profound Impact on Patient Care
Hospital statistics presented during the announcement confirmed the profound impact of the initial 2019 intervention. The machine has treated over 2,000 patients, drastically reduced the cost of therapy by 80 per cent, and shortened the duration of a typical therapy session from 12 minutes to a mere 2 minutes. Furthermore, the support has enabled 712 indigent patients to receive subsidized care, many receiving treatment free of charge.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Muhammed Ali Pate, commended the intervention, urging other industry players to emulate the gesture. “Partnerships like this help expand access to affordable cancer treatment and strengthen national healthcare infrastructure,” Dr. Pate added.
The Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Muhammad Raji Mahmud, described the donation as a “lifeline of hope” for thousands of patients, noting that the support has significantly bolstered the national capacity for cancer treatment, thereby reducing reliance on costly medical tourism. The Managing Director of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, Tony Attah, framed the donation not as charity, but as a long-term strategic investment in the well-being and resilience of the Nigerian nation.
