Nigeria’s 65th Anniversary: Former President Goodluck Jonathan Asks Citizens to Hold Firmly to Hope Amid National Challenges

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has called on Nigerians to maintain faith and optimism in the country’s future, even as the nation marks its 65th Independence Anniversary amidst significant socio-economic and security challenges.

In a goodwill message to Nigerians on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, which was issued by his Media Adviser, Mr. Okechukwu Eze, the former President urged citizens not to succumb to despair. He emphasized that the Independence Day celebration provides a vital opportunity for collective reflection on the journey of nation-building.

Acknowledging the current difficulties, Jonathan stated: “It is true that we face challenges that could test our sense of hope; insecurity, economic disparities and institutions that often struggle to deliver on the promises of improved wellbeing, peace and security.”

However, he strongly cautioned against a loss of faith. “Yet, as citizens, we must not lose faith. We must continue to nurture hope and sustain belief in the nation’s enormous potential and the resilience of the people,” he stressed.

The former leader highlighted Nigeria’s inherent strengths, describing it as a “blessed nation, endowed with vast land, abundant natural resources, and, above all, the ingenuity and creativity of the people.” He further noted that the country’s “cultural richness, our knowledge, and our wisdom have continued to distinguish Nigerians across every sphere of human endeavour, both at home and abroad.”

Concluding his message, Jonathan urged all citizens to let patriotism guide their actions. “Let us hold firmly to optimism and faith, knowing that the greatness of our country is within reach if we remain united and steadfast,” he said, wishing for the nation to continue to “rise in strength and purpose.”
