Nigerian Air Force Dismantles Over 100 Illegal Refineries in Ongoing Anti-Crude Theft Operations

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified its campaign against crude oil theft, successfully dismantling more than 100 illegal refining sites across several oil-producing states, including Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, over the past five months.

According to Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, these operations are part of the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe, aimed at curbing illegal oil activities and safeguarding national economic interests. The airstrikes have also led to the destruction of 53 boats, 74 cooking tanks, two crude oil reservoirs, and multiple transport vehicles used by oil thieves.

The targeted strikes focused on key areas notorious for illegal refining activities, such as Buguma, Imo River, Port Harcourt, Okrika, Egbema/Ohaji, and the Trans Niger Pipeline corridor. These efforts have significantly disrupted the logistics and operational capabilities of oil theft syndicates operating in these regions.

Air Vice Marshal Gabkwet emphasized that these air operations are integral to a broader national strategy to combat militancy, prevent environmental degradation caused by illegal refining, and protect critical oil and gas infrastructure vital to Nigeria’s economy.

The NAF’s commitment to eradicating oil theft and illegal refining activities underscores the government’s resolve to restore integrity to the nation’s oil sector and ensure environmental sustainability in the Niger Delta region.
