Nigeria officially joins BRICS as a partner country, Brazil announced on January 17, 2025, during its tenure as the rotating president of the group.

“The Brazilian government announces today, January 17, 2025, the official accession of Nigeria as a partner country of the group,” stated the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, as reported by News.Az and foreign media outlets.

Brazil emphasised shared priorities between BRICS and Nigeria, noting their mutual focus on strengthening cooperation among Global South countries and advocating for reforms in international organisations.

Brazil assumed the BRICS presidency from Russia on January 1. At the BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia, in October, member nations decided to establish a new category of BRICS partner countries. Initially, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan were named as partners. While Indonesia was also originally listed as a partner, Brazil announced on January 6 that the country had been elevated to full BRICS membership.
