Niger Federal Legislators Donate N20 Million to Mokwa Flood Victims, Bolstering Relief Efforts

In a commendable show of solidarity, members of the House of Representatives and Senators representing Niger State at the National Assembly have jointly donated N20 million to support the victims of the devastating floods that recently wreaked havoc on Mokwa Local Government Area. This collective contribution, reported on Wednesday, June 12, 2025, underscores the commitment of the state’s federal lawmakers to alleviate the suffering of their constituents.

The floods, which struck Mokwa between May 28 and 29, 2025, following torrential rainfall and a reported dam collapse, resulted in catastrophic damage and significant loss of life. Official figures indicate over 200 fatalities, hundreds injured, and thousands displaced. More than 3,000 homes were affected, with 458 completely destroyed, while critical infrastructure, including major roads and bridges, were washed away, severely disrupting daily life and economic activities. The disaster also submerged over 10,000 hectares of farmlands, threatening food security in the region.

The N20 million donation from the Niger State federal legislators is intended to directly assist the affected families and aid in the ongoing recovery process. While the specific details of the handover ceremony were not immediately available, such donations are typically channeled through the state government or designated relief committees to ensure proper distribution to the most vulnerable.

This donation from the federal lawmakers complements other significant interventions aimed at providing succour to the Mokwa flood victims. The Federal Government, through Vice President Kashim Shettima, had earlier announced a N2 billion relief fund and pledged 20 trucks of grains for the affected communities. Similarly, the Niger State Government, under Governor Umaru Bago, committed N1 billion and 50 trucks of assorted grains, in addition to awarding a N7 billion contract for the reconstruction of the Mokwa-Raba Road and four new bridges to enhance infrastructure resilience.

Furthermore, Senator Sani Musa, representing Niger East Senatorial District (though the N20m is from a collective of Reps and Senators), had also reportedly donated N50 million and several truckloads of food items to the flood victims earlier in June. International bodies like the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society have also been actively involved in providing emergency shelter, non-food items, and other essential services.

The collective efforts from various levels of government and individual legislators highlight the widespread impact of the Mokwa floods and the concerted response to mitigate its devastating effects. The N20 million from Niger State’s federal representatives will contribute significantly to the ongoing humanitarian and rehabilitation efforts, providing much-needed financial assistance to families struggling to rebuild their lives.
