New Lagos CP Tijani Fatai Distributes ₦53m to Families of Fallen Officers; Police Chief Calls for Community ‘Joint Task Force’ to Crush Cultism

Lagos State’s new top cop, CP Tijani Fatai, has hit the ground running with a mix of “compassion and collaboration.” On Thursday, April 2, 2026, just a week after taking command, Fatai “flipped the script” on the usual administrative transition by prioritizing the families of officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. By presenting ₦53 million in insurance benefits, the CP sent a clear message that under his watch, the welfare of those who protect Lagos will never be an afterthought.

The “Solution” to the state’s security challenges, however, cannot rest on the police alone. Speaking at a security summit at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, CP Fatai was blunt about the need for civilian help. “We cannot be everywhere at once,” he told an audience of traditional rulers and community leaders. He urged them to act as the “eyes and ears” of the law, specifically targeting the resurgence of cult clashes that have recently plagued areas like Ikorodu and Ajah.

The ₦53 million disbursement is part of a broader national initiative by the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that the “Renewed Hope” agenda reaches the doorsteps of grieving police families. For many of the widows and children present at the ceremony, the cheques represented more than just money; they were a long-awaited recognition of their loved ones’ service to the state.

As CP Fatai settles into his role, his “open-door policy” is already being tested. With the 2027 political season beginning to heat up and the National Police Week celebrations in full swing, the new CP has vowed to maintain a “zero-tolerance” approach to any form of electoral violence or civil unrest. For now, the combination of financial support for his troops and an olive branch to the community has set a promising tone for his tenure.
