NEMA Names Adamawa, Lagos, Akwa Ibom as Top Three Most Affected States with Over 164,000 Victims

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has sounded a fresh alarm, identifying Adamawa, Lagos, and Akwa Ibom States as the regions grappling with the most severe impact of the ongoing 2025 flood disaster.

In its latest situation report covering the period from January to October this year, NEMA highlighted the devastating scale of the crisis, revealing that these three states alone account for a major portion of the flood victims across the country.

According to the figures released by the Agency, Adamawa State tops the list, recording 60,608 persons impacted by the raging waters. Close behind is the nation’s economic nerve center, Lagos State, with 57,951 affected persons. The South-South state of Akwa Ibom follows as the third most hit, with 46,233 individuals caught in the disaster. Collectively, these three states have seen over 164,000 residents severely impacted.

The grim statistics paint a picture of a national humanitarian emergency. NEMA disclosed that a staggering total of 409,714 persons have been affected across 117 Local Government Areas in 27 States nationwide. Furthermore, the flood has resulted in the displacement of 135,764 persons and claimed 238 lives across nine states, including Niger, Adamawa, and Borno.

The reports underscore the recurring vulnerability of the nation to environmental crises, often exacerbated by a combination of heavy rainfall, poor drainage infrastructure, and a failure to enforce environmental planning regulations in flood-prone areas.

NEMA has reiterated its appeal for proactive collaboration with state governments and international partners to intensify mitigation efforts, provide emergency relief, and assist the thousands of displaced persons in temporary shelters as the rainy season progresses. The agency continues to deploy search and rescue teams while coordinating relief distribution to the worst-hit communities in the states.
