NDDC Disburses ₦5 Billion for Women, Youth Empowerment Through Skills Training in Niger Delta

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has announced the release of ₦5 billion to kickstart skills training and entrepreneurship development programs targeting women and youths across the Niger Delta region. The significant disbursement, part of a larger ₦30 billion approved for empowerment initiatives, was disclosed by the Managing Director/CEO, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the NDDC’s 25th anniversary and a concurrent women and youth conference in Owerri, Imo State, Ogbuku emphasized the Commission’s strategic shift from transactional to transformational projects. “This funding aims to equip these beneficiaries with the necessary skills to improve their socio-economic well-being,” Ogbuku stated, highlighting the goal of creating lasting impact and sustainable livelihoods for residents of the nine NDDC states.

The ₦5 billion has been disbursed to the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, which will manage the skills training program. To ensure transparency and effective targeting, potential beneficiaries will be required to register with the Chamber of Commerce and provide essential data to access the funds and participate in the programs.

Ogbuku further revealed that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for the region, particularly his focus on agricultural development. He announced plans for a mini agricultural summit and retreat, aimed at drawing a comprehensive roadmap for the next phase of agriculture in the Niger Delta, integrating it with youth empowerment. The NDDC chief executive also assured that the President would maintain a keen oversight on the Commission’s activities to ensure meaningful results and prevent project abandonment.

The event, which was attended by various dignitaries, including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by his Deputy, Dr. (Mrs.) Chinyere Ekomaru, received commendation for the NDDC’s efforts in infrastructural development and human capital enhancement. Governor Uzodimma urged continued partnership between the NDDC and state governments on critical projects such as flood control and rural electrification.

This empowerment drive is expected to provide much-needed opportunities for women and young people in the resource-rich but historically underserved Niger Delta, equipping them with the tools to become self-reliant and contribute to the region’s economic prosperity.
