MMNL to Invest $50M to Scale Tubular Battery Production to 100,000 Units Over Next 5 Years

Metal Manufacturing Nigeria Limited (MMNL) Expands to Dominate Tubular Battery Market and Diversify Ventures

Metal Manufacturing Nigeria Limited (MMNL) is not just Nigeria’s largest tubular battery company; it is also diversifying into multiple business verticals, including backward and forward integration and mining, to stay ahead of its competitors.

To meet the rapidly growing demand in Nigeria’s energy sector, MMNL is planning to double its production capacity to 60,000 units per month in the next financial year. The company intends to invest around $50 million in expanding capacity, launching new greenfield projects in the energy backup segment, R&D, mining and beneficiation, plastic container and carton manufacturing, brand building, and engaging channel partners to accelerate its ambitious growth targets.

As the first company to produce tubular batteries in Nigeria, MMNL has faced numerous challenges over the past five years, including a lack of skilled manpower, supply chain duopolies, difficulties in sourcing raw materials, unstable power supply, rising electricity tariffs, gasoline prices, and machinery and spare parts scarcity. Despite these hurdles, MMNL has persevered, providing thousands of employment opportunities and advocating for government policy support, such as increased import duties on foreign competitors and export duties for raw materials.

To address these challenges, MMNL has conducted hundreds of technical training sessions to enhance the skill set of local manpower and ventured into mining, beneficiation, plastic container, and carton manufacturing to ensure a steady supply of raw materials. The company has also launched a dedicated service center to resolve customer issues.

By 2024, MMNL achieved a stable production of 30,000 units per month and now dominates 35% to 40% of the market share. This means that for every five batteries sold in Nigeria, two are from MMNL. As an industry leader, MMNL is committed to delighting customers with quality and innovation while significantly contributing to local employment and saving foreign exchange.

MMNL is focused on completing its end-to-end supply chain cycle with backward and forward integration to proliferate its growth and survive in a volatile environment. The company has already invested $25 million in battery production and lead and oxide manufacturing in Shagamu, Ogun State. MMNL’s current production capacity of 30,000 inverter batteries is set to double to 60,000 units at the start of the new financial year, with plans to reach over 100,000 units by 2027-2028 with a new greenfield production plant and backward integration into lead-zinc ore mining and beneficiation.

To ensure its brand is accessible across Nigeria, MMNL is expanding geographically, forging multi-channel partnerships, and leveraging eCommerce and digital channels. With 14 years of manufacturing experience in Nigeria, MMNL has created high entry barriers for both existing and new players in the tubular battery manufacturing sector.
