Makinde Advocates for Dignified Politics Ahead of PDP National Convention, Emphasizing Fairness and Unity

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has intensified his call for the upcoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention to be conducted with utmost transparency, fairness, and inclusivity. The Governor’s statement underscores the prevailing internal tensions within the party as it prepares for the crucial convention, which is scheduled to take place in November in Ibadan.

Makinde, a prominent leader in the party, has stressed that the process of selecting the party’s leadership must be rooted in fair processes, open debate, inclusivity, and respect. According to the Governor, a convention grounded in these democratic principles is essential to strengthen the PDP internally and to project an image of dignified politics to the Nigerian public.

The call for unity and a fair process comes against the backdrop of a deepened rift and exchange of words between the Governor and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who leads an influential faction within the opposition party. Governor Makinde has maintained a principled stance, publicly stating that he would not be dragged into “gutter politics” by responding to personal attacks, opting instead to focus on constructive solutions for the party.

Party analysts believe Makinde’s latest appeal is a strategic attempt to ensure the convention is not hijacked by personal conflicts or anti-democratic forces, which other PDP Governors have also warned against. The outcome of the convention is seen as a critical determinant of the PDP’s direction and viability as a credible opposition force in Nigeria’s political landscape. The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) continues to assure members that the convention will hold as planned.
