Labour Party Caucus Criticizes Tinubu’s Leadership Amid Economic Decline
The Labour Party (LP) Caucus in the House of Representatives has expressed concern over Nigeria’s economy, which they claim has been in a “dangerous free fall” since President Bola Tinubu assumed office a year ago.
In a statement signed by their leader, Afam Ogene, the lawmakers said the current economic and security situation casts doubt on Tinubu’s ability to fulfill his promise of renewed hope for Nigerians. They noted that rising insecurity and economic hardship contradict Tinubu’s agenda.
The statement reads in part: “Our Caucus had initially stepped back, hoping that the new administration might pull the nation back from the brink of economic collapse. However, it has become painfully clear to all that President Bola Tinubu’s tenure has continued the negative trends of his predecessor.”
The LP lawmakers highlighted alarming economic indicators and urged Tinubu to urgently focus on alleviating the suffering of Nigerians by ensuring food security, clean water, healthcare, and education.
“Tackling poverty and guaranteeing these necessities are pivotal to sustaining peace in the nation,” the statement continued.
They also called for intensified efforts against corruption, emphasizing the importance of transparent governance and accountability. Additionally, the lawmakers warned against over-reliance on foreign financial institutions, whose policies they described as often detrimental to developing countries.
