Legendary 89-Year-Old Monarch Joins the Ancestors; Governor Sanwo-Olu weeps for ‘A Wise Father and Great Peace-Maker!’

A great iroko tree has fallen in the ancient coastal town of Badagry. The people of Lagos are in mourning today following the announcement that the Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has passed away at the age of 89.

The monarch, who occupied the throne for more than four decades, was one of the most respected traditional rulers in Nigeria. Known for his calm nature and deep wisdom, the Akran was a symbol of unity, not just for the Ogu people but for all Lagosians.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a touching tribute, said the death of the Akran is a “colossal loss” to the state. “We have lost a father, a guide, and a man who loved peace above all else,” the Governor remarked. He noted that the King’s long reign was filled with progress, especially in making Badagry a world-class center for history and tourism.

In the streets of Badagry, the atmosphere is somber as residents prepare for the traditional rites that follow the passing of such a high-ranking King. Markets are expected to be closed, and cultural ceremonies will take over the town as the community celebrates the long and fruitful life of a King who saw Badagry change from a quiet town into a major part of modern Lagos.

As the news of his transition spreads, tributes are pouring in from all over the country for the man who spent nearly half a century protecting the culture and traditions of his people.
