Kwara State Pledges Quality Primary Healthcare, Citing Ongoing Investments and Upgrades
The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to improving the health and well-being of its citizens through a renewed focus on quality primary healthcare. This assurance was delivered by the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA), Professor Nusirat Elelu, who emphasized that the current administration is committed to strengthening healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
According to a statement from the agency, Professor Elelu noted that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration has shown a consistent political will to make healthcare accessible, particularly in underserved rural communities. As part of this commitment, the state has already revitalized more than 70 Primary Health Care (PHC) centers, ensuring they are well-equipped and functional. Several other facilities are also undergoing phased upgrades to meet the growing health demands of the population.
In addition to infrastructure development, the state has launched a comprehensive “Integrated Health Outreach Programme” (I-HOP) across all 193 wards. The initiative, which is supported by global partners like the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, is designed to bring essential services directly to the people. These services include routine immunization for children, tetanus vaccines for women, and general health screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar.
The KWSPHCDA boss further stated that investments have also been made in strengthening health information systems through digital tools, which will improve planning, monitoring, and accountability. She praised nurses and midwives as the “backbone of our health system,” vowing that the government will continue to invest in their training, welfare, and overall professional empowerment. The government’s consistent efforts and partnerships with international agencies underscore its mission to build a sustainable healthcare system that leaves no community behind.
