Kwankwaso Blasts Defectors to APC, Calls Moves ‘Highest Level of Betrayal’

The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has strongly condemned recent defections from his party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the act as “the highest level of betrayal.”

Kwankwaso, who addressed journalists in Kano on Friday, expressed deep disappointment over what he termed as opportunistic politics by former NNPP members, some of whom were key beneficiaries of the party’s support during the last general election.

“This is not just about politics. It is about integrity and commitment to building a new Nigeria,” Kwankwaso said. “Those jumping ship are betraying not just the party, but the millions of Nigerians who believed in a fresh political alternative.”

Although he did not name the defectors directly, sources indicate that several NNPP lawmakers and party executives in the North-West region have officially announced their switch to the APC in recent weeks, citing internal party disagreements and alignment with national interests.

Kwankwaso accused the APC of actively destabilizing opposition parties through inducements and political pressure. He called on NNPP supporters nationwide to remain firm and not be discouraged by what he termed “political scavengers.”

Political analysts say the wave of defections could impact NNPP’s positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in Kano and Jigawa states where the party gained significant ground in 2023.

However, Kwankwaso insists the defections will not derail the party’s vision. “Let them go. We are focused on the future and on Nigerians who still believe real change is possible,” he declared.

The NNPP leader also hinted at a major party reorganization in the coming weeks to strengthen its grassroots appeal and rebuild trust among loyalists.
