Katsina PDP Faction Eyes 2027 Coalition to Unseat Ruling APC
A prominent faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State has announced that it is in advanced discussions with other political parties to form a formidable coalition aimed at dislodging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power in the state and at the federal level in the 2027 general elections.
The plans were revealed by Alhaji Mustapha Inuwa, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) under the APC administration, who later defected to the PDP. Inuwa, who also served as the presidential campaign Director for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the 2023 elections, made this known while addressing PDP stakeholders in Katsina.
According to Inuwa, discussions have reached a crucial stage with members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), and surprisingly, even “prominent APC members” who are reportedly discontent with the current ruling party. “It may shock you to know that some of the APC members who are supporting this movement are holding key positions in the APC government at the state and federal level,” Inuwa was quoted as saying, indicating potential internal dissent within the APC ranks.
The opposition movement, which reportedly includes influential politicians from both within and outside Katsina State, is working towards reaching a consensus on a specific political party to adopt as their platform ahead of the 2027 elections. This strategy aims to present a united front against the APC, capitalizing on any perceived weaknesses or disaffection among the electorate.
Among the notable stakeholders present at the meeting were former National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Umar Tsauri; former Senator representing Daura Zone, Ahmed Babba-Kaita; and Ahmed Musa-Yar’adua, among others. Their presence signifies the seriousness and high-level engagement driving these coalition talks.
This development comes at a time when the political landscape in Katsina State has seen shifts. While the APC recently secured a landslide victory in all 34 chairmanship and 361 councillorship positions in the state’s local government elections held in February 2025, the PDP faction’s move suggests an underlying determination to challenge the status quo ahead of the crucial 2027 polls. It also follows recent defections of some PDP lawmakers from Katsina to the APC, who cited “incurable crisis” within their former party as the reason for their move.
The formation of such a coalition would be a significant political realignment, potentially posing a strong challenge to the APC, which has dominated Katsina politics in recent years, including securing the governorship in 2023. Political observers will be watching closely to see how these inter-party discussions evolve and whether the opposition can consolidate their efforts to present a formidable force in the next general election.
