Kano Governor Presents Historic ₦1.37 Trillion 2026 Budget, Dedicating 68% to Capital Projects with Education Taking Top Priority

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, yesterday, Wednesday, November 19, 2025, presented a landmark appropriation bill totaling ₦1.368 trillion for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly. This proposal marks the first time the state has crossed the trillion-naira threshold in its budget planning, reflecting an aggressive push for infrastructural and economic expansion.

Tagged the “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth, and Sustainable Development,” the fiscal plan allocates a massive 68 per cent (₦934.6 billion) to capital expenditure one of the highest capital-to-recurrent ratios in the state’s history demonstrating a strong commitment to long-term development. Recurrent expenditure stands at 32 per cent, or ₦433.4 billion.

Addressing the lawmakers, Governor Yusuf emphasized that the budget is a “bold but realistic roadmap” designed to consolidate ongoing reforms and ensure that the state achieves resilient and inclusive growth.

Education and Infrastructure Lead the Charge

The Governor highlighted the strategic allocation of funds, confirming that the social and economic sectors received the largest share of the capital vote.

Sector Allocation Percentage of Total Budget
Education ₦405.3 billion 30%
Infrastructure ₦346.2 billion 25%
Health ₦212.2 billion 16%

Governor Yusuf noted that this unprecedented investment is aimed at nurturing human capital, safeguarding the well-being of citizens, and laying a solid physical foundation for sustainable growth. Other key sectors, including Agriculture, Security, Commerce, Water, and Youth Development, also received substantial provisions.

The Governor attributed the historic budget size to the administration’s successful efforts in strengthening internal revenue generation (IGR) mechanisms and sealing financial leakages. He urged the Speaker, Rt. Honourable Jibril Ismail Falgore, and the entire House to grant the bill a speedy passage to ensure seamless implementation from January 1, 2026.
