Ibadan in Mourning: Olubadan Oba Owolabi Olakulehin Dies at 90, One Year After Coronation
The revered traditional ruler of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin I), has passed away at the age of 90. His demise, confirmed in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, comes barely two days after he marked his 90th birthday, and just shy of his first anniversary on the exalted throne.
Oba Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, had officially received his staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on July 12, 2024. His brief reign, though less than a year, was significant for the ancient city, known for its unique and meticulously structured succession system.
The passing of the monarch has plunged Ibadan into mourning, with family members, high chiefs, and residents expressing profound sorrow. Former Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun, confirmed the death on behalf of the Ige Olakulehin family, describing the late Olubadan as a man of honour whose life spanned distinguished careers in military service, business, politics, and traditional leadership. While the immediate cause of his death was not officially disclosed, it is understood he had been unwell even before his ascension.
As Ibadan mourns, attention immediately shifts to the succession process for the Olubadan stool, a system lauded for its stability and predictability. The throne alternates between two distinct lines: the Balogun (military) and the Otun (civil). With Oba Olakulehin having ascended from the Balogun line, the focus now turns to the Otun Olubadan, who is the next in line.
Former Oyo State Governor, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, currently holds the title of Otun Olubadan, making him the highest-ranking chief in the civil line and the widely anticipated successor. His ascension would follow customary mourning periods and formal ratification by the Olubadan-in-Council, subject to the approval of the Oyo State Governor.
Tributes have begun pouring in for the late Oba Olakulehin, remembering his commitment to peace, unity, and the preservation of Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage. His passing marks a solemn moment for the people of Ibadan and the broader traditional institution in Nigeria.
