House of Representatives Schedules Full-Day Debate for Thursday on Nationwide Insecurity Following Mass Abductions and Killings
The Nigerian House of Representatives has announced that it will dedicate its full plenary session this coming Thursday, November 20, 2025, to a comprehensive debate on the escalating wave of nationwide insecurity. The decision reflects the grave concern among lawmakers over the recent surge in killings, mass abductions, and violent bandit attacks across the country.
The move comes immediately after the House, on Tuesday, adopted a motion of urgent public importance that vividly painted the dire security situation in parts of the North West. Specifically, the House condemned the actions of bandits in communities within the Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where over 130 people were abducted, more than 10 people were killed, and a massive ₦100 million tax was reportedly imposed on vulnerable communities.
Mr. Kabiru Ahmadu Maipalace, who sponsored the motion, detailed the humanitarian crisis, stating that the demand for a N100 million tax is not only unjust but unattainable for a population already suffering immense loss and lacking basic necessities like food and healthcare.
Directives to the Executive
Following the intense debate on the Zamfara crisis, the House passed resolutions that directly challenge the executive’s security approach. Lawmakers called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to explore new and different strategies to contain the escalating security issues. Furthermore, the House mandated the Ministers of Defence and all Service Chiefs to immediately relocate to Zamfara State to coordinate a massive and rigorous operation aimed at addressing the banditry crisis in the region.
The planned debate on Thursday is intended to broaden this discussion, moving beyond isolated incidents to a national evaluation of the security architecture. Lawmakers are expected to scrutinize the allocation of security funds, the coordination among various security agencies, and the failure of existing strategies to protect rural communities. The outcome of the debate is expected to lead to new resolutions and legislative mandates aimed at compelling the executive to take more decisive and effective action.
