Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has instructed the state’s auditor general to commence an audit of the accounts of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) for the past three years. This decision comes amidst an ongoing political crisis affecting the state.

During the swearing-in ceremony for the Caretaker Committee Chairmen of the LGAs, Governor Fubara explained that the audit is meant to ensure accountability for the incoming officials. He urged the newly appointed chairmen to prioritize the interests of their constituents and prove that their appointments were justified.

Emphasizing the democratic nature of current events, Fubara highlighted that the fight against tenure extension is a national issue, as permitting it in one state could set a precedent across the country. He pointed out that Rivers State’s use of caretaker committees is not unique, as many other states employ similar measures.

Fubara assured that the caretaker chairmen’s tenure would be brief, with preparations for local government elections already underway. He discouraged any form of violence, advocating instead for a peaceful resolution to issues, and urged the officials to address the salaries and entitlements of outgoing chairmen.
