The government urged the ex-CBN chief not to undermine the President’s reforms out of grievances over his estrangement from political allies.

The Federal Government on Thursday responded to Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, asserting that his validation is not required for President Bola Tinubu’s reforms.
FG to Sanusi: Don’t Undermine Tinubu’s Reforms Over Personal Grievances
The Federal Government has expressed disappointment with Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, asserting that his support is unnecessary to validate President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.
In a statement on Thursday, Information Minister Mohammed Idris criticized Sanusi for allegedly shifting his stance on key policies like the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of forex rates. Idris suggested that Sanusi’s recent criticisms stem from personal grievances and a perceived estrangement from political allies.
“It is surprising that a traditional ruler of his status would openly admit to withholding the truth because of imagined antagonism,” Idris said.
He emphasized that, given Sanusi’s background in economics, he has a responsibility to contribute positively rather than undermine reforms aimed at national development.
“These temporary challenges, as Sanusi himself once acknowledged, are the necessary consequences of years of poor economic management,” the minister noted.
Idris urged Sanusi to set aside personal interests and partisan undertones, calling on him and other leaders to champion unity and cooperation for Nigeria’s progress.
“Rebuilding Nigeria requires focus and sacrifice from all stakeholders. Esteemed leaders should avoid rhetoric that undermines public trust. This is a critical time for the country — what we need is collaboration, not distractions,” Idris added.
Background
Sanusi, a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, recently stated at the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Lecture in Lagos that he would not offer assistance to the Tinubu administration on Nigeria’s economic challenges.
After being deposed as Emir of Kano by the Ganduje administration in 2019, Sanusi was reinstated last year under the administration of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf. However, his return is being contested in court by the deposed 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.
The Federal Government has denied allegations that it is supporting Bayero in the dispute.
