FG Declares This Thursday and Friday as Public Holidays for Eid-el-Fitr; Tunji-Ojo Urges Nigerians to Share Love and Peace

The Federal Government has given Nigerians a reason to smile this week by declaring a two-day public holiday to mark the 2026 Eid-el-Fitr celebration. In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, March 17, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, will be work-free days across the nation.

This celebration, often called “Sallah,” marks the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan. The Minister praised the Muslim faithful for their discipline and spiritual reflection over the past month. He reminded all citizens that the “spirit of Ramadan” which is about helping the poor and living in harmony should continue even after the fasting ends.

“Peaceful coexistence is what makes our country strong,” the Minister said in his message. He encouraged Nigerians of all religions to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in celebrating responsibly and to remember to pray for the nation’s security and economic growth.

With this announcement, banks, schools, and government offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday, giving families enough time to travel and enjoy the festivities. The Minister also wished everyone a very happy and safe holiday.
