FG Cancels Independence Day Parade for 65th Anniversary, All Other Events Remain Scheduled

The Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has announced the cancellation of the traditional Independence Anniversary parade that was scheduled to be the centerpiece of the nation’s 65th Independence Day celebration on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The announcement was made in a press release on Monday by Mr. Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information & Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF). The statement, however, did not provide a specific reason for the decision.

Despite the cancellation of the parade, which typically features a grand military display and procession, the government assured the nation that the decision does not reduce the importance of the milestone. “The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the statement read.

The OSGF confirmed that all other programmes slated for the Independence Anniversary will remain in effect, including the previously declared public holiday for October 1st. This year’s celebration, themed “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” will proceed with its other planned activities.

The Federal Government concluded by regretting any inconvenience caused and urging citizens, the diplomatic community, and invited guests to continue supporting the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
