The Federal Government has issued a stern warning that it will not tolerate any form of corruption or indiscipline among officers and personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), delivered this message on Tuesday in Abuja during his first strategic meeting with Sector and Zonal Commanding Officers from across the 36 states and the FCT.
Represented by Dr. Maurice Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Akume emphasized the administration’s expectation for greater efforts towards achieving zero road accidents nationwide.
The SGF urged senior officers to maintain high standards of integrity and to closely monitor personnel for effective traffic control. Akume commended the Corps’ dedication to preparing for the significant task of ensuring safer roads for the public.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that President Bola Tinubu approved the appointment of Malam Shehu Mohammed as the FRSC Corps Marshal in May 2024. Akume noted that this appointment came with high expectations and confidence in Mohammed’s ability to deliver based on his track record.
Akume highlighted the theme of the strategy session, “Equipping Commanding Officers for Effective Performance,” as essential for the Corps to review its activities and explore improvements toward fulfilling its mandate. He emphasized the importance of the FRSC in creating a safer motoring environment in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“There is no doubt that this strategy session is a means to coordinate the big, bold steps needed to realize your ambitious goals for the Corps,” Akume stated. He assured that with government support, the Corps could achieve its Corporate Strategic Goals as outlined in the 2024 Agenda.
The SGF stressed that the FRSC is crucial to the government’s developmental goals as a frontline service delivery entity. He called on officers to remain committed to their mandates and to uphold the highest standards of integrity.
“The Federal Government will not tolerate any form of corrupt practices and indiscipline among officers and men,” Akume declared.
He acknowledged the collaborative efforts required from all levels of government, the private sector, and other stakeholders to develop the Corps. Akume also assured that the Tinubu administration would continue to work with international partners, including the World Bank, to provide the necessary logistics for the Corps.
The administration, he added, would continue to support the FRSC’s noble aspirations through adequate funding and strategic support for sustainable growth and development.
Akume described the Renewed Hope Agenda as more than a political statement, but a covenant between the government and the people, requiring collective effort for efficient service delivery. He expressed optimism that future generations of Nigerians would benefit from today’s efforts.
He urged the FRSC management to strive for excellence and collaborate with other security and traffic management agencies. Akume assured that the current administration would provide the necessary assistance to enhance FRSC operations.
“I am optimistic that Commanding Officers will be better equipped by the proceeds of this strategy session to work assiduously towards the creation of a safer motoring environment in Nigeria,” Akume stated. He emphasized the importance of aligning the Corps’ operations with the Renewed Hope Agenda and called for deliberate actions to improve safety, adherence to traffic rules, and sustained safety management in Nigeria.
