Federal Government Says New Tax Laws are for Fairness; Low-Income Earners to Pay Zero Tax as Small Businesses Get Big Relief

The Federal Government has sent a clear message to all Nigerians: the new 2026 tax reforms are here to protect the poor, not just to fill the government’s pockets. Speaking on Tuesday, March 17, officials explained that for a tax system to be successful, it must be “fair and just” for everyone.

The new “Tax Reform Success” plan is designed to give breathing room to those who need it most. For example, if your yearly salary is ₦800,000 or less, you are now officially exempt from paying income tax. Small businesses are also celebrating because if they don’t make up to ₦50 million in a year, they don’t have to pay corporate tax anymore. This is part of the “Renewed Hope” plan to help small businesses survive these tough times.

The government expert in charge, Taiwo Oyedele (who was just sworn in as a Minister), said that the goal is to stop “taxing investment” and start making the system simpler. He noted that about 98% of Nigerian workers will either pay less tax or no tax at all under this new system. Instead, the government will focus on high-income earners and big companies to make sure they contribute their fair share.

To make things even easier, the government is moving everything online. They are using new technology to stop “multiple taxation,” where different people come to collect the same tax from your shop. With these changes, the government hopes to double the money the country makes in three years without making life harder for the average Nigerian.
