Federal Government Agency NDPHC Restores 450MW to National Grid Following Major Scheduled Maintenance at Geregu NIPP Plant
The Federal Government has achieved a significant boost in the nation’s power generation capacity, announcing the successful restoration of an additional 450 Megawatts (MW) to the national grid. The increase was confirmed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) today, Tuesday, December 9, 2025, following the completion of critical maintenance work on the Geregu National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) plant in Kogi State.
According to a statement from the NDPHC, the capacity restoration follows an extended four-week minor inspection carried out by technical experts from Siemens Energy. This scheduled maintenance was executed to significantly enhance the plant’s operational reliability, performance, and efficiency, thereby extending its overall lifespan and strengthening one of the country’s most strategically important generation assets.
The Managing Director of NDPHC, Engr. Jennifer Adighije, described the Geregu recovery as part of a wider, sustained effort to bring previously dormant national assets back online. She revealed that, within the last year alone, the company has successfully recovered six previously inactive gas turbines across its fleet, including units at the Calabar, Omotosho II, and Benin NIPP plants. Collectively, these revived units are expected to contribute a massive 875MW to the NDPHC’s available generation capacity, marking one of the largest single-year capacity recoveries by a generation company in recent history.
Furthermore, the company announced the commencement of restoration work on the long-idle 225MW Gbarain NIPP plant in Bayelsa State, which has been out of service since 2020. This initiative is geared toward not only improving national supply but also commercializing the output to support key industrial clusters in the Niger Delta region.
