FCT Police CP Confirms Arise TV Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu Died After Jumping from Third Floor During Robbery, Says ‘Doctors Tried to Resuscitate Her’
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has provided its official account on the tragic death of ARISE News anchor and producer, Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, clarifying the circumstances that led to her demise amidst reports of alleged hospital negligence.
The FCT Commissioner of Police (CP), Ajao Adewale, confirmed that the 29-year-old journalist died after jumping from the topmost floor of her apartment during an armed robbery operation in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday, September 29, 2025.
In an interview on Wednesday, CP Adewale confirmed the robbery invasion at the Unique Apartments, a three-storey building where the late anchor, popularly known as “Sommie,” resided.
“Some unknown armed robbers gained access into Unique Apartments where Sommie lived. Two private security guards were on duty. One of them, who had the courage to challenge the robbers, sustained a gunshot injury,” Adewale stated.
The CP explained that in the ensuing panic, Maduagwu, who lived on the third floor, tragically jumped. “In the panic that followed, Sommie, who lived on the topmost floor of the building, jumped down from the third storey. The consequences were tragic and very unfortunate,” he noted.
Addressing claims of neglect, the Commissioner of Police affirmed the police’s response: “Policemen moved to the scene and found her lying unconscious. She was immediately taken to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors tried to resuscitate her using CPR, but sadly, she could not make it.” This statement appears to counter earlier public outcry from the media community alleging that the hospital staff had initially refused to treat her without an identification document.
The CP has ordered a “discreet and comprehensive investigation,” led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation), to track down the robbers responsible for the “cruel and senseless act.”
The Command extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Somtochukwu Maduagwu, assuring the public that “no stone will be left unturned until the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
