Enugu Govt Issues Urgent Rabies Alert After Outbreak in Igbo Etiti; Health Ministry Orders All Dogs Chained and Vaccinated Immediately
The Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation has hit the “panic button” following a confirmed outbreak of rabies in the Igbo Etiti area. On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Commissioner Patrick Nwabueze Ubru “flipped the script” on casual pet ownership, warning that the state is facing a highly fatal health threat that could spread rapidly if not contained.
The “Solution” to the outbreak involves a strict new mandate for all residents: vaccinate and restrain. The government has noted that many dogs in the affected communities are roaming freely, increasing the risk of the virus jumping from animals to humans. “Once clinical signs of rabies appear, the disease is almost always fatal,” Ubru warned, stressing that community awareness is the only way to prevent human casualties.
Health officials have released a specific emergency protocol for anyone who comes into contact with a suspected rabid animal. Beyond the “10-minute” washing rule, victims must seek immediate medical care to receive life-saving post-exposure shots. Community leaders in Igbo Etiti and neighboring local governments have been tasked with educating their people on the signs of the virus, which include abnormal behavior, foaming at the mouth, and unusual aggression in pets.
The State Veterinary Services Department has been placed on high alert and is currently working with local stakeholders to track the spread. As the government moves to safeguard public health, the message to Enugu residents is loud and clear: your dog must be vaccinated today, or it could become a death sentence for your family and neighbors.
