Democracy Day: Rivers Governor Fubara Reaffirms Commitment to Rule of Law, Transparency Amidst Political Turbulence

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, today, Thursday, June 12, 2025, leveraged the occasion of Nigeria’s Democracy Day to unequivocally restate his unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, promoting transparency, and fostering inclusive governance in the state. His address, delivered from Port Harcourt, comes amidst a backdrop of persistent political upheavals that have challenged democratic stability in Rivers State.

In his Democracy Day message, made available to newsmen by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara reflected on Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, acknowledging both the triumphs and trials that have shaped the nation’s journey. He stressed that the recent political turbulence in Rivers State served as a stark reminder of “how fragile democracy can be.”

“This moment reminds us of how fragile democracy can be,” Governor Fubara said, referring to the political standoff that has frequently disrupted governance in Rivers. “We must guard it with sincerity, justice, and respect for the rights of all citizens.” He emphasized his administration’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property through robust security strategies, and pledged to continue defending the state’s interests.

The Governor reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining a government that prioritizes inclusivity, transparency, and accountability. He called for intensified collaboration across all political divides, asserting that the future of Rivers State hinges on the collective ability of its people to “work together, innovate, and push forward with shared goals.” Fubara encouraged every citizen to actively participate in creating a peaceful and united society, one built on healing, mutual understanding, and a shared vision for long-term development.

The state experienced a declaration of a six-month state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, which also saw the suspension of Governor Fubara and other elected officials, a move that has drawn widespread commentary and legal challenges. While the state of emergency is still in effect, and the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), has been overseeing affairs, Fubara continues to deliver public statements as the recognized elected governor.
