Democracy Day: APC Responds to Atiku, PDP’s Criticism of Tinubu’s Reforms

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for holding President Bola Tinubu responsible for the current economic hardships in the country.

In separate statements issued in Abuja on Tuesday, commemorating Democracy Day on June 12, both Atiku and the PDP condemned Tinubu for the hyperinflation affecting the economy.

Atiku and the PDP warned that the “reaction of hungry people is better imagined.”

The PDP candidate also urged Tinubu to listen to the masses and reconsider his policies, which he claimed are making it extremely difficult for citizens to afford basic necessities.

However, the ruling APC maintained that reforms like the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira are essential to prevent the country from collapsing entirely.

In an exclusive interview with The  APC National Director Bala Ibrahim expressed disappointment with the statements from Atiku and his party, accusing them of being economical with the truth.

Ibrahim emphasized that it is widely known that both President Tinubu and the late democracy hero, Chief MKO Abiola, share similar ideologies and democratic values.

He said, “With due respect, I think Atiku is being economical with the truth. He started well by praising the front runners, but he is not sincere in his criticism. The government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu can be likened to the ambition of Chief MKO Abiola. This administration aims to actualize Abiola’s vision.

“Virtually everything the government is doing follows the blueprint Abiola would have used to govern Nigeria, with the goal of uniting the country and adhering to democratic principles as Abiola envisaged.

“So, for Atiku to blame Tinubu’s administration for the country’s poverty is disingenuous. He is playing politics with the truth, which is unfair. Atiku and the PDP should shoulder most of the blame. The PDP’s ambitions are the opposite of what the late MKO Abiola stood for, which is essentially an anti-people program. Atiku is playing politics, and he is playing it wrongly.”

He added that the citizens are in safe hands and noted that reforms take time.

“Nigerians are in safe hands, especially with the changes aimed at reforming governance, the economy, and institutions. These changes cannot happen overnight. It is like treating a fracture or dislocation—it takes time to fix, and while doing so, there will be pain and anguish. But ultimately, there will be widespread approval, which is what Tinubu is bringing to Nigeria.”
