Civic Group Hails CDS Oluyede as North Central Sees Security Boost; Communities Once Plagued by Banditry Begin to Witness ‘Gradual Restoration of Order’

The fight against insecurity in Nigeria’s North Central region has received a major “vote of confidence” from civil society. Today, March 26, 2026, the Civic Centre for National Security and Civic Responsibility (CCNSCR) issued a statement applauding the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for what it described as “notable and encouraging improvements” in military operations across the zone.

For years, parts of the North Central often referred to as the Middle Belt have been hotspots for farmer-herder clashes and banditry. However, the Centre’s Executive Director, Dr. Johnson Audu, noted that the script is finally flipping. He credited the current military leadership with a more “intelligence-led” approach that has moved beyond just reacting to attacks. “We are seeing a more proactive Armed Forces that is disrupting criminal enclaves before they can strike,” Audu stated, adding that the improved coordination between the Army, Air Force, and local security outfits is the “Solution” the region has been waiting for.

The report highlights that key transport routes and farming communities in states like Plateau, Benue, and Niger are experiencing a much-needed breather. The CCNSCR pointed to increased troop visibility and a significant drop in successful kidnappings as proof that the military’s “renewed sense of direction” is working. However, the group warned that these gains are still “fragile” and must be sustained through the upcoming festive season to prevent any setbacks.

As the nation prepares for Easter celebrations, the military has been urged to “keep the foot on the gas.” While the praise for Lt. Gen. Oluyede and his team is high, the Centre emphasized that the ultimate victory depends on the “unwavering support” of the local population. By denying criminals safe havens and providing timely tips to the frontline, the CCNSCR believes the North Central can move from “pockets of stability” to a permanent state of peace.
