Canada Launches Initiative to Support Northern Women and Youth

Canada Launches RISE Project to Empower Women and Youth in Northern Nigeria

Canada has unveiled the Resilient and Inclusive Agri-Food Systems Empowering Women and Youth (RISE) Project, aimed at supporting women and youth entrepreneurs in Northern Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Announced by Canada’s Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, in a statement from the Canadian High Commission in Abuja, the initiative will provide direct support to 450 women- and youth-led agribusinesses and 250 smallholder farmer cooperatives in Bauchi, Kano, and Kaduna states.

With a budget of ₦20.2 billion (Can$19.2 million), RISE aims to foster inclusive economic growth, enhance food security, and create 8,000 jobs. The five-year project will be implemented by Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) in collaboration with Nigerian partners.

Hussen emphasized the importance of investing in women and youth, stating:

“Empowering women and youth in Nigeria’s agri-food sectors creates good jobs, supports local communities, and strengthens food security. This investment enhances both Canada and Africa’s collective economic prosperity.”

The initiative aligns with Canada’s Africa Strategy, which commits Can$869.5 million to over 50 development and humanitarian projects across the continent.

Support from Nigerian Governors

Governors from the three beneficiary states welcomed the initiative:

  • Bauchi Governor, Bala Mohammed, highlighted the project’s role in removing barriers for women and youth, building on the successes of the previous Nigeria WAY project.
  • Kaduna Governor, Uba Sani, stressed that women are at the frontline of food production and that the project will help address inequalities hindering their economic advancement.
  • Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf, emphasized the need for climate-smart technology to combat climate challenges such as flooding and desertification.
