Anambra Government Approves Over N9.6 Billion for Crucial Erosion and Road Projects
The Anambra State Executive Council has given its approval for the release of over N9.6 billion for critical erosion control and road rehabilitation projects across the state. This significant financial commitment underscores the administration’s resolve to address pressing infrastructural challenges and mitigate environmental hazards.
The Commissioner for Works, Engr. Ifeanyi Okoma, confirmed the approval, stating that the funds are earmarked for 17 erosion sites and 10 major road projects that have been identified as high-priority areas. According to Commissioner Okoma, the move is a demonstration of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to ensuring that the state’s resources are deployed effectively to improve the living conditions of its citizens and enhance connectivity.
Among the specific projects slated for immediate attention under this approval is the Umueze-Nawgu road, a vital artery that has long been a source of concern for commuters and residents due to its dilapidated condition. The comprehensive scope of work includes extensive earthworks, drainage construction, asphalting, and the implementation of robust erosion control measures designed to prevent further land degradation.
Anambra State, situated in the South-East geopolitical zone, is particularly vulnerable to gully erosion, which poses a severe threat to communities, infrastructure, and agricultural lands. The approval of funds for 17 erosion sites indicates a strategic and holistic approach to tackling this pervasive environmental issue, which has displaced many and destroyed properties over the years.
Similarly, the focus on 10 road rehabilitation projects aims to improve intra-state transportation, facilitate economic activities, and enhance access to various communities. Good road networks are crucial for trade, agriculture, and general socio-economic development.
Commissioner Okoma assured the public that the projects would be executed with strict adherence to quality standards and within stipulated timelines. The state government is committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the utilization of the allocated funds. This approval is expected to bring significant relief to residents in the affected areas and contribute to the state’s overall infrastructural development.
