Abia Teachers Condemn Rising Vandalism of Public Schools, Call for Urgent Intervention
Teachers and school administrators in Abia State have raised an alarm over the escalating issue of vandalism in public schools, warning that the criminal activities are severely hindering education in the state. The educators voiced their concerns during a recent visit by the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), which was distributing educational materials to pupils in Umuahia.
Speaking on behalf of her colleagues, the headmistress of World Bank Model Primary School, Queen Okoroafor, described the situation as critical. “This act of vandalism is seriously undermining teaching and learning and rendering the environment unsafe,” she stated, noting that vandals are brazenly stealing steel windows, roofing sheets, and other critical infrastructure. The widespread theft and destruction are eroding the very foundations of public education, creating a demoralizing and insecure environment for both students and staff.
Mrs. Florence Umezuruike, the Education Secretary for Umuahia North Local Government Education Authority, acknowledged the gravity of the situation. She confirmed that a list of schools in dilapidated conditions due to vandalism has been submitted to the state government, with assurances that ongoing renovation efforts would eventually reach all affected schools. This statement comes amidst the government’s broader reform agenda for the education sector, which includes a pledge to train teachers, improve welfare, and enhance security.
In response to the teachers’ concerns, the President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, Eugene Okonta, condemned the vandalism and urged students to uphold strong moral values. The OYC’s visit highlights a growing trend of civil society organizations stepping in to advocate for and support educational institutions. While government efforts to deploy security personnel and promise renovations are in motion, teachers’ continued outcry underscores that more needs to be done to protect public school infrastructure and secure the future of education in Abia State.
